WAR STORIES @ The Tank NYC
May 20 - June 12, 2022
Marthe Rachel Gold’s War Stories, set in World War II New York City, is the story of Ruth, a young musician from a working class immigrant family who has come to the city in pursuit of her music, her freedom, and her politics. Exploring the world through music, through labor action, and through relationships, she is committed in her support of the war. Her pro-war views are challenged by Nat, who comes from a wealthy industrial Jewish family and sees all wars as capitalist and corrupt. War Stories embeds their personal struggles within the context of those of workers and conscientious objectors, against a backdrop of anti-semitism, racism, and union struggles. It is awash in the music of the time period. Original music by Zachary Catron.

Hosted by Percussion faculty member Ian Rosenbaum and Composition Faculty members Missy Mazzoli and David T. Little.
In April 2020, as lockdowns began across the US and in-person classes were cancelled, composers and Mannes faculty members Missy Mazzoli, Ian Rosenbaum and David T. Little looked for ways to keep their students connected with performers and with each other. They paired four composers (Zachary Catron, Scott Fish, Jonathan Wyatt and Thomas Nickell) with student percussionists (Zikun Zhao, Chia-An Yeh, Ken O’Rourke and Yueyi Liu), to create new works for the instruments, objects, dishes and cutlery the percussionists happened to have with them in quarantine. The resulting works explore the beauty and potential of the everyday objects around us, and remind us that there is potential for creative and joyful music-making in nearly every circumstance.
